PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a communication system, and repeater constituting the above communication system, capable of identifying an upper-level communication apparatus and a lower-level communication apparatus, in regard to the communication system including the higher-level communication apparatus having a means for external communication, and the lower-level communication apparatus for transmitting and receiving a signal to/from the upper-level communication apparatus through a power line. SOLUTION: A parent modem 1 and a child modem 3 transmit through a power line 9 each identifier for identifying each self-modem inclusively in a signal. The signals transmitted by the parent modem 1 and the child modem 3 are received in the repeater 2. The repeater 2 identifies whether each signal received through the power line 9 has been transmitted from the child modem 3 or from the parent modem 1, based on the identifiers included in the signals. The repeater 2 transmits the signal transmitted from the child modem 3 to the parent modem 1, and transmits the signal transmitted from the parent modem 1 to the child modem 3, thereby relaying the signals transmitted and received between the parent modem 1 and the child modem 3.
