PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surface quality evaluation method for a magnetic recording medium, in which projections of≤10 nm in size on a magnetic recording medium surface can be detected and a distribution thereof can be obtained. SOLUTION: In the surface quality evaluation method, a magnetic recording medium having a lubricant layer is rotated, a press-contact tape is brought into press contact with the rotated magnetic recording medium, surface processing to slide the press-contact tape back and forth between the outer and inner peripheral parts of the magnetic recording medium is performed, a lubricant is moved to and accumulated on projections on the surface of the magnetic recording medium, and the surface of the magnetic recording medium is observed by an optical measuring device using laser beams of 200 to 800 nm.
