PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium capable of preventing a functional layer from bing peeled off while keeping sufficient strength and durability, and easily detecting coating defects by using visible light. SOLUTION: The magnetic recording medium has a nonmagnetic supporting body (base film 5), reinforcement layers 2 and 6 formed on the nonmagnetic supporting body (base film 5) by using AlO<SB>X</SB>(aluminum oxide), wherein the ratio of the number of atoms of oxygen to the total value of the number of respective atoms of the oxygen and aluminum is regulated within the range being≥18% atoms and≤45% atoms, and functional layers (lower layer nonmagnetic layer 3 and backcoat layer 7) formed on the reinforcement layers 2 and 6. By adopting this configuration, the functional layers (lower layer nonmagnetic layer 3 and the backcoat layer 7) are surely prevented from being peeling off while ensuring sufficient strength and durability, and additionally, high reliability can be obtained even when performing high density recording because a coating defect can easily be detected by using visible light.
