PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a mechanical seal for resisting to strong alkali while surely preventing liquid leakage. SOLUTION: The mechanical seal 150 is used for a liquid circulating pump which circulates and distributes electrolytic solution (sodium carbonate water solution) in a liquid resistor. A mating ring 152 is loosely fitted to a rotating shaft 151, and it is not moved in the axial direction. A seal ring 157 is annularly mounted on the rotating shaft 151, and it can be rotated together with the rotating shaft 151 and moved in the axial direction. A spring 160 pushes the end face of the seal ring 157 against the end face of the mating ring 152 for sealing between the rotating sliding surfaces of both of them. The mating ring 152 and the seal ring 157 are each formed of a alkali-resistant and hard silicon carbide having good sliding property, thus eliminating the accumulation of particles on the sliding surface and improving sealing property.
