PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for smelting molten cast iron, which can improve an addition yield of a graphite spheroidizing agent by desulfurizing and deoxidizing molten cast iron in advance of adding the graphite spheroidizing agent, when smelting the molten cast iron for the purpose of obtaining spheroidal graphite cast iron or compact vermicular cast iron. SOLUTION: The method for smelting the molten cast iron comprises the steps of: adding a deoxidizing and desulfurizing agent 2 having both of a desulfurizing function and a deoxidizing function, to the molten metal 1 produced by melting an iron source material; and adding the graphite spheroidizing agent containing at least one of metallic Mg and a Mg alloy. Thus, the graphite spheroidizing agent is added into the molten metal 1 in which a sulfur content and an oxygen content have been reduced by the added deoxidizing and desulfurizing agent 2, so that magnesium in the graphite spheroidizing agent is inhibited from combining with sulfur and with oxygen as well. The Mg also further improves desulfurization efficiency because it agitates the molten cast iron when the graphite spheroidizing agent is added therein. COPYRIGHT: (C)2007,JPO&INPIT
