A display device and a control method thereof are provided to prevent non-uniform degradation of the display device by changing pattern data for a displayed image without causing users discomfort in viewing. A display device includes a display unit, which displays an image. The image is displayed by pixels, which are arranged in rows and columns. The display device includes a light emitting element, a driving unit, a memory(8), and a controller(1). The light emitting elements are included in the pixels. The driving unit controls light emitting states of the light emitting elements, changes colors of the respective pixels, and displays characters or patterns on the display unit. The memory stores the colors and shapes of the characters or patterns. The controller changes pattern data, when the image containing the character or the pattern is displayed on the display unit.
