PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide the cooling structure of a cylinder block and a method of forming it, capable of efficiently cooling an upper side part between cylinder bores. SOLUTION: A U-shaped cooling passage 10 which is so formed that the upper side part between the cylinder bores is extended in the width direction of the cylinder block 1 and both its end parts are bent upwardly and opened to the upper surface of the cylinder block 1, is formed as a hole as cast when casting the cylinder block 1. Cooling passages 11 are downwardly extended and formed by boring work with a drill from both the opening parts 10a, 10b of the cooling passage 10, and a third cooling passage 12 is laterally formed by boring work with the drill so that the lower end parts of the cooling passages 11 are connected to each other, and water jackets 3, 4 on an intake side and an exhaust side are connected to each other.
