The method involves connecting different controllers with each other by a bus, and deactivating the controller into a sleeping condition during ignition. The sleeping condition is quit only for a short time for data transmission. The function of a wake-up guardian is integrated in the bus system. The wake-up guardian monitors the activity of the individual control device, whether a control device sends or request data via a bus. The control device is detected when the bus neutral signal is send or request. The activity of the control device is stored in a memory.
