Provided are an electrode for a fuel cell which is excellent in catalytic activity, has high ion conductivity and a wide surface area and reduces the crossover of a hydrocarbon fuel, a membrane electrode assembly containing the electrode, and a fuel cell system containing the assembly. The electrode comprises a support formed by a carbon nanofiber(1); a nanocarbon(3) grown on the carbon nanofiber; and a catalyst(5) located at the nanocarbon. Preferably the carbon nanofiber and the nanocarbon are connected by a hydrogen ion conductive binder(7) selected from the group consisting of poly(perfluorosulfonic acid), poly[2,2'-(m-phenylene)-5,5'-bibenzimidazole], poly(2,5-benzimidazole), polybenzoxazole and polybenzthiazole; and the catalyst is selected from the group consisting of Pt, Ru, Fe, Pd, Ni, Rh and Co. |
