The invention relates to a product, namely a cross-linking agent for gelling systems of the type carboxylate, Cr(III) acetate, which is the result of the one-step oxidation of formic aldehyde with chromium anhydride, in acetic acid medium. The Cr(III) acetate is presented as a deep green aqueous solution having a density of 1.17...1.29g/cm3, a content of Cr(III) ions ranging from 6 to 11%, preferably from 8 to 10%, a pH value ranging from 3 to 4, preferably 3.3 and lacks of anionic contaminants of the type Cl^(-), SO4^(2-).
