An image forming apparatus is provided to reduce the manufacturing cost and sense a paper jam generated in the image forming apparatus. An image forming apparatus includes a bottom cover(107,108), a top cover, and a jam sensor(115). The bottom cover comes into contact with a printing medium when a printing medium jam occurs on a transfer path and is opened upward when the pressure of the printing medium caused by the printing medium jam becomes higher than a predetermined reference value. The top cover comes into contact with the bottom cover and is opened when the bottom cover is opened. The jam sensor is operated by the top cover. A fixing unit is located under the bottom cover. The fixing unit applies heat and pressure to a toner image transferred to the printing medium to fix the toner image onto the printing medium and includes a heat roller(176) and a press roller(177).
