Production of N-acyl-N'-(alkyl or phenyl)-imidazolium salt reactants of (I) involves reacting a carboxylic acid chloride or bromide, chloro- or bromoformate or carbamoyl chloride or bromide (II) with an N-(alkyl or phenyl)-imidazole (III), then reacting the product with a strong acid having a pKa of less than 1. Production of acyl-imidazolium reactants of formula (I) involves: (1) reacting a halo-carbonyl compound of formula R-Z-CO-X (II) with an imidazole compound of formula (III); and (2) reacting the product with a strong acid of formula HY having a pKa of less than 1. R1 = alkyl or phenyl; R = alkyl, alkenyl, cycloalkyl, aryl or aralkyl; z = direct bond, O or NR2; R2 = as R1; Y = anion of an acid HY having a pKa of less than 1; X = Cl or Br. |
