A method for controlling operation of a multimedia device and an apparatus thereof are provided to operate the multimedia device without inconvenience of precisely pressing buttons on the multimedia device. A method for controlling operation of a multimedia device includes the steps of detecting a tapping input by pressing the multimedia device(810), detecting a pattern of the detected tapping(820), and controlling the multimedia device according to the detected pattern(830). The step of detecting the tapping includes the steps of sensing acoustic signals of the inputted tapping, detecting energy of the sensed acoustic signals, and detecting the detected energy as an event when the detected energy satisfies a predetermined condition. The predetermined condition is that the magnitude of the detected energy is greater than a predetermined level and an interval of the detected energy has a predetermined duration.
