Apparatus and methods for running based training using resistance and assistance are disclosed. The apparatus (1) includes a cable retainer (2) that releases and collects a length of cable (3), the end of which is attached to a trainee (5). The cable provides a horizontal line of force from the trainee's centre of gravity (4) and can provide either resistance or assistance depending on whether the cable is being released or collected. A measuring device measure measures the length of cable released and collected over a set period of time
