PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a vibration damper having an inexpensive and simple vibration damping mechanism and also applicable to existing buildings. SOLUTION: This vibration damper works by having its vibration damping component 1, which comprises a shock absorbing spring 7 and an extendable turnbuckle 11 connected in series with the shock absorbing spring 7, fixed to the structural components of a building, such as beams and columns. The shock absorbing spring 7 is composed of two U-shaped components 13, 14 inserted into a spring body 12 from opposite directions to each other, with their opening ends 13A, 14A connected with the spring body 12, while their U-shaped base ends 13B, 14B are connected with the turnbuckle 11 via an extendable rod 9.
