PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method by which an aromatic polymer having characteristic groups can simply be produced, and to provide a method by which an aromatic polymer having bromo groups can simply be produced. SOLUTION: This method for producing the reactive aromatic polymer comprises subjecting a polymer which contains one or more kinds of repeating units represented by the general formula (1): -Ar<SP>1</SP>- (Ar<SP>1</SP>represents an arylene group having at least one C-H bond on the aromatic ring, or the like) and in which the total amount of the repeating units of the general formula (1) is 0.1 to 100 mol.% based on the total amount of all the repeating units, to an aromatic electrophilic substitution reaction to obtain the polymer containing repeating units having characteristic groups X.
