An electrical capacitor is produced with a housing within which is the capacitor winding [5] on a former having a central bore [6]. Inset into this is a membrane plug [8] with a membrane [10] that allows generated gases to pass from the capacitor. The plug is of an elastic material and the membrane is of a non porous gas permeable material.
