A polymeric fuel tank (10) having a first body (12) joined to a second body (14) is constructed having a substantially continuously barrier layer (44,56) surrounding the tank (10). The first body (12) has an inner surface (22) terminating at a free edge (36) and a first mating surface (40) adjacent the free edge (36). A first barrier layer (44) is fixed adjacent the inner surface (22) of the first body (12). The second body (14) has an inner surface (50) terminating at a free edge (52) and has a second mating surface (54) adjacent to the first mating surface (40) and the free edge (52) of the second body (14) to define a fuel cavity. A second barrier layer (56) is fixed adjacent the inner surface (50) of the second body (14). At least one weld joint (16) joins the first mating (40) surface to the second mating surface (54) and the first barrier layer (44) to the second barrier layer (56) to provide the continuous barrier layer in the fuel tank (10).
