PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To execute file management and object management distinctively. SOLUTION: A video file, recorded on an information storage medium, is constituted of extents each of which is a continuous unit. A video object can be arranged divided into a plurality of the extents. Within the recording reproducing video management data, a cell (CELL) capable of designating an arbitrary range in the above video object can be defined. A plurality of program chains (PGC) for setting reproduction order by connecting the plurality of the cells can be defined. Between the cells belonging to the different program chains, the same part in the video object can be designated with duplication. The information on the file system includes a file entry FE in which a recording position for the video file is described. The FE includes an allocation descriptor AD. The AD includes both the information on length and the information on position of the extent. Existence of a non-recorded area in the above video file is allowed in the video file.
