With reference to Figure 1, the present invention provides an internal combustion engine comprising a cylinder (13) in which a combustion chamber (14) is defined between opposed faces of two pistons (11, 12) which reciprocate in the cylinder (13). An intake port (17) and an exhaust port (16) open on to the cylinder (13) and are opened and closed by the pistons (11, 12) as they reciprocate in the cylinder (13). Phasing means is provided to vary motion of one piston (11) relative the other piston (12) and thereby alter in timing opening and closing of the intake (17) and exhaust ports (16) by the pistons (11, 12).
