A mobile terminal having a network state display function and an instant messaging system using the same are provided to enable a user to cope with a situation that the user's connection with the other party is suddenly cut off in using a messenger service because of an unexpected network state. A messenger management server(130) maintains a connection of a messenger service, checks a network connection state of the other party for conversation, and transmits information about the connection state to a mobile terminal. Mobile terminals(100,105) receive the information from the messenger management server(130). The messenger management server(130) checks the network state through a primitive packet transmission time with the mobile terminals(100,105). A proxy server(110) and a WAP(Wireless Application Protocol) gateway(120) check the network state through the primitive packet transmission time with the messenger management server(130).
