A surface light source device is provided to improve an effect of preventing bright lines by preventing light reflected from a flattened plane opposite to a light exit plane from entering deflecting patterns. A surface light source device(31) includes a light source(35), a light guide plate(34) guiding light entered from the light source, and a plurality of deflecting patterns(37) formed on a flattened plane opposite to a light exit plane(39) of the light guide plate, wherein the light guided in the light guide plate is reflected by the deflecting patterns to emit the light from the light exit plane. Diffusion patterns(38) for diffusing the light entered from a light guide direction in a direction different from the light guide direction when it is seen in a direction vertical to the light exit plane, are not protruded more than the flattened plane opposite to the light exit plane at a light source side of the deflecting patterns.
