PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus where the variation in the velocity of a belt such as an intermediate transferring belt upon the contact moment of a transferring remaining toner cleaner to the belt is easily and surely suppressed, and a color misalignment between toner images superposed and transferred to the surface of the intermediate transferring member can be suppressed. SOLUTION: Regarding a cleaner 9 for cleaning a transferring remaining toner, e.g., on an intermediate transferring belt 5, at the moment of starting the contact of a cleaning blade 91 with the belt 5, the cleaner 9 is contacted with the belt 5 in such a manner that the velocity components in the belt tangential direction of the blade 9 in the mutual contact starting part between the blade tip 91a and the belt 5 are made equal to the belt velocity in the mutual contact starting part of the belt 5, and, after the contact moment, the cleaner 9 is moved while being slowed down to a final contact position for belt cleaning to the belt 5.
