PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and an apparatus for forming a pipe which enables a quick and smooth reduction in the diameter of the end portion of a metallic pipe so as to have a non-axisymmetric shape cross section, such as an ellipse, a polygon. SOLUTION: The apparatus comprises a main spindle motor 13 having a chuck 12 for gripping the metallic pipe 11, a turn angle sensor 14 attached to the main spindle motor, a working roller 15 for forming the metallic pipe gripped by the chuck, a driving means 16 which can drive the working roller in the axial direction and in the radial direction of the metallic pipe, and a control means for controlling the driving means. The diameter of the metallic pipe is smoothly reduced so as to have a required cross sectional shape by repeating the process for changing the set cross sectional shape so as to synchronize with the axial feed of the working roller, while advancing and withdrawing the working roller in the radial direction so as to synchronize with the turn angle of the main spindle motor such that the contact point of the working roller and the pipe traces the preset cross sectional shape.
