PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an ECL display with which reliability degrading caused by water, oxygen, light and the like is not generated and an extended life is materialized, and also to provide an EC/ECL display. SOLUTION: The display device has: the first substrate 1; the first electrode 2 formed on the first substrate; and an electrolyte solution layer 5 formed so as to be in contact with the first electrode and containing an oil-soluble surfactant with a concentration higher than the critical micelle concentration.
