PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display element improving whiteness and having a high black and white contrast ratio. SOLUTION: This liquid crystal composition containing a self-organizing type gelling agent and a liquid crystal showing a cholesteric phase at a room temperature is provided with that the self-organizing type gelling agent is a compound expressed by general formula (1) [wherein, A1, A2are each an alkyl having a branched group].
