A method for controlling power consumption of a battery and a mobile device employing the method are provided to minimize power consumption by adjusting the speed of a CPU and the brightness of a backlight, controlling the power consumption of a device that may not be recognized by a user, and terminating an unnecessary background program. A user input module(100) receives a usage request time and a type of an application program to be executed. An operation mode determining module(110) calculates an estimate power consumption amount required for executing the application program during the usage request time, detects a remaining power amount of a mobile device, and determines an operation mode of elements of the mobile device by using the estimate power consumption amount and the remaining power amount. An operation control module(120) controls an operation of the elements by the determined operation mode.
