<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To accurately estimate the deposition amount of particulate on a particulate filter from pressures across the filter even if ash is deposited thereon. <P>SOLUTION: A pressure loss factor k for coping with the reducing change of a filter effective capacity and an amount of pressure differenceΔP<SB>ASH</SB>due to the deposition of ash are obtained based on the estimated value of the deposited amount of ash based on a travel distance.
