A method for storing files and backing up contents in a mobile terminal is provided to utilize the storage space of a mobile terminal at a maximum by automatically backing up long unused files, without the necessity of backing up data one by one with a user's own hands. In case that an automatic backup function has been established(S101), the mobile terminal checks whether a preset backup time arrives(S102). If the preset backup time comes, the mobile terminal searches files and makes a list for unused files(S103). Then the mobile terminal executes backup process in a preset method(S104). In this case, the mobile terminal carries out backup process by sending associated files to the user's E-mail address, compresses selected files, or deleting searched files according to a preset method(S105-S114). If backup process is completed, the mobile terminal displays a complete message and recounts the backup date(S115,S116).
