A method for detecting a living microorganism, a damaged microorganism, a VNC microorganism and a dead microorganism in a sample by flow cytometry, the method comprising the steps of: a) treating a sample to be detected with an enzyme capable of degrading any non-microorganism cell, protein colloidal particle or fat present in the sample; b) treating the sample with a topoisomerase inhibitor and/or a DNA gyrase inhibitor; c) treating the sample given after the treatments in steps a) and b) with a nuclear staining agent; and d) detecting a microorganism or microorganisms treated with the nuclear staining agent in the sample by flow cytometry.
