<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To drive a optical semiconductor device having a photo semiconductor element into which a semiconductor laser diode and an optical modulator are integrated by a single power supply. <P>SOLUTION: The optical semiconductor device has the optical semiconductor element into which the semiconductor laser diode (LD) and the light modulator (MOD) are integrated so that a pn junction points in the same direction. The common terminal of the semiconductor laser diode and the light modulator is set to a reference potential (Vcm) different from a grounded potential, a first potential which is the same polarity as the reference potential is applied to other terminal of the semiconductor laser diode, a circuit for applying a second potential which is the same polarity as the grounded potential or the reference potential and becomes a standard basis of a modulation signal is provided to the other terminal of the light modulator, and the semiconductor laser diode and the light modulator are driven in the reverse direction using the reference potential as a standard basis.
