A retrofit HID lamp assembly (14) , for use in a non-HID lighting receptacle (12) , to provide HID illumination is disclosed The lam assembly includes (i) a housing (20) compatible in size and shape with the receptacle (12), (n) a base terminal (18) coupled wiih the housing (20) and adapted to mate with the receptacle (12), (in) a ballast unit (22) in the interior of the housing (20), (iv) a reflectoi (24) overlying the ballast unit (22) in the interior of the housing (20), (v) an HID lamp (26) electrically coupled with the ballast unit (22) and mounted in the interior of the housing (20), and (vi) a lens (28) coupled with the housing (20) A corresponding fabrication methodology is described The retrofit HID lamp assembly (14) may be used to retrofit existing lighting installations such as PAR receptacles in exterior aircraft lighting systems, to provide a cost-efficient illumination upgrade.
