PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To shorten a coasting distance and the time until an advancing direction of a vehicle changes when operating switchback during traveling in second gear, in a switchback controller applied to a cargo handling vehicle such as a fork-lift truck mounted with a transmission capable of changing gear speeds between two gears in both forward and reverse directions. SOLUTION: The switchback controller is composed of the transmission 2, a forward/reverse lever 3, a vehicle speed sensor 4, an advancing direction sensor 5, and a control means 6. The advancing direction sensor 5 is provided for detecting the advancing direction of the vehicle, and the control means 6 is provided for forcibly shifting the transmission 2 into the first gear when the advancing direction of the vehicle is different from a position of the forward/reverse lever 3 when a vehicle speed is a second gear speed or higher.
