An instrument measures noise caused by leakage. Measurements are taken at different positions, in each case associating the acoustic properties of the noise with the position. Position and values are stored by the instrument, for each location. Noise amplitude spectra are compared. The comparison employs the highest-amplitude frequency component. Using predetermined weighting, various parameters of measured values are formed for each measurement location, the results at all locations being compared with each other.
