PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a vehicle periphery monitoring device capable of avoiding collision of a vehicle before it happens by easily detecting presence/absence of a forward vehicle with high accuracy. SOLUTION: This vehicle periphery monitoring device has: infrared-emitting diodes 1A, 2A, 3A respectively provided in a headlight 1, a tail lamp 2, and a turn indicator 3; a front camera 4, a rear camera 5, and a side camera 6 provided in one's own vehicle, imaging infrared light from the infrared-emitting diodes 1A, 2A, 3A of another vehicle; a vehicle speed sensor 8 detecting a vehicle speed of the own vehicle; an arithmetic processing part 7 taking in a vehicle speed signal detected by the vehicle speed sensor 8 and imaging data imaged by each the camera 4, 5, 6, calculating a relative distance and a relative speed between the own vehicle and the other vehicle, and calculating a braking distance allowing the avoidance of the collision of the own vehicle and the other vehicle on the basis of a calculation result thereof; and a monitor 7 and a speaker 10 each issuing a warning when the actual relative distance between the own vehicle and the other vehicle approaches the braking distance.
