PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal alignment agent for exhibiting a high pre-tilt angle, having superior voltage holding rate, and suitable for a liquid crystal display element. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal alignment agent is composed of a polymer having a structure selected from a group consisting of the structures represented by formulas (1) and (2), wherein P is a tetravalent organic group from which two anhydride groups are removed from tetracarboxylic acid dianhydride, Q is a divalent organic group, X is an oxygen atom or a sulfur atom, A is a divalent organic group, B is 1-30C alkyl group or haloalkyl group, and n is an integer of 1-5.
