PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and an apparatus for driving a liquid crystal device, in each of which the writing time in the specific liquid crystal device is shortened even when a scanning-system exposure unit is used. SOLUTION: The method for driving the liquid crystal device, which is used for recording an image in the liquid crystal device 1 composed by laminating a liquid crystal layer 7 consisting of a cholestric liquid crystal and at the least on a photoconductor layer 10 to obtain a laminated material and arranging electrodes 5, 6 respectively on both outsides of the laminated material, comprises a step (1) of applying a voltage, which exceeds a threshold of the phase change of the liquid crystal layer 7 from a planar phase to a focal conic phase, between electrodes 5 and 6, a step (2) of exposing the liquid crystal device while applying a voltage, which does not exceed a threshold of the phase change of the liquid crystal layer 7 from the focal conic phase to a homeotropic phase when the liquid crystal device is not exposed but exceeds the threshold when it is exposed and makes bistable the focal conic phase and the homeotropic phase by a hysteresis, between electrodes 5 and 6, and a step (3) of releasing the applicationof the voltage to establish the image to be displayed.
