<p>During the machining of a workpiece, in order to achieve a high surface quality of the machined workpiece, an at least hexagonal cutting insert is provided in which the edges forming the lips (16A,B) are arranged alternately at a small angle (.alpha.) and a large angle (~) relative to one another and are designed alternately as roughing lips (16A) and finishing lips (16B).
