Provided is an apparatus for protecting a secondary battery, which discharges a secondary battery to protect a lithium secondary battery and a user from a risk such as firing or explosion when the battery is exposed to a calorific or high-temperature environment. The apparatus(102) for protecting a secondary battery comprises: a temperature sensor(104) that senses a temperature of a secondary battery(100) and generates control currents according to the sensed temperature; and a switching device(106) that connects both ends of the secondary battery(100) with each other to forcibly discharge the secondary battery(100) according to the control current. If the sensed temperature is above a certain temperature, the control current is supplied to the switching device(106).
