A forward/reverse scanning-type display device is provided to increase brightness in using the same light source by improving the optical efficiency of a projection beam per hour and to reduce power consumption by decreasing the maximum driving acceleration and the driving frequency of a scanner. A forward/reverse scanning-type display device includes light source systems(106R,106G,106B) generating and emitting the light; lighting optical units(108R,108G,108B) converting the light emitted from the light source system into the linear incident light; a diffractive light modulator(110) generating the linear diffracted light by modulating the linear incident light input from the lighting optical unit according to a driving signal; a projecting and scanning optical unit(116) generating an image by repeatedly scanning the linear diffracted light emitted from the diffractive light modulator on a screen(118) in a first direction and the reverse direction; and a display electronic system(104) controlling the diffractive light modulator to generate the linear diffracted light including image information in a first direction scanning range and the reverse scanning range by outputting a driving signal to the diffractive light modulator in the first and reverse scanning ranges.
