<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve use efficiency in an illumination device and a display device. <P>SOLUTION: A rod type optical element 3 emits the light, emitted by a light source part 1 and made incident on the rod type optical element 3 through an opening part 6, while making the quantity of the light uniform, a reflection type polarized light separating means 9 reflects, to the side of the incidence surface, a light of wavelength other than a specified wavelength transmitted through a wavelength selective phase difference means 8 while having a phase difference corresponding to the wavelength selectivity of each selected wavelength range as to polarized light emitted from the emission surface side of the rod type optical element 3, and a light reflecting means 7 reflects it on the emission surface side of the rod type optical element 3 again. Consequently, the light of wavelength which is not within the specified wavelength range can be made incident on the wavelength selective phase difference means 8 again. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO |
