Microalgae or microalgal extracts are used to prepare medicaments or as food additives for preventing or treating protozoal infections in humans or animals. Independent claims are also included for: (1) medicament for preventing or treating protozoal infections, comprising microalgae or a microalgal extract and a carrier; (2) food additive for preventing or treating protozoal infections, comprising microalgae or a microalgal extract. ACTIVITY : Protozoacide. A chloroform extract of Kirschneriella lunaris gave more than 90% growth inhibition when tested against Histomonas meleagridis (concentration not stated). MECHANISM OF ACTION : None given.
