An image display device with a controllable luminance and a method for controlling the luminance thereof are provided to easily and accurately control the luminance of the image display device by using a PWM(Pulse Width Modulation) signal. An image display device includes an external luminance sensor(410) and a luminance controller(420). The external luminance sensor detects an external luminance outside the image display device. The luminance controller generates a PWM signal and an analog signal, which are used for controlling the luminance of the image display device according to image information of an input image signal. The luminance controller generates a luminance controlling PWM signal by processing the PWM signal, the analog signal, and the external luminance. The luminance controller normalizes the PWM signal by using the external luminance, adds a first predetermined value to the analog signal, multiplies the added result by a second predetermined value, divides the multiplied result by the first predetermined value, and adds the normalized PWM signal to the divided result.
