A color electrophotographic image forming apparatus (A) for forming an image on a recording material, includes (i) a mounting portion for detachably mounting a plurality of process cartridges (9) each including an electrophotographic photosensitive drum (1) and a developing roller (23) for developing an latent image formed on the drum (1), wherein developing roller (23) is movable between a contact state where the developing roller (23) is contacted to the drum (1) and a spaced state where the developing roller (23) is spaced from the drum (1), wherein the cartridges (9) develop the latent images with colors different from each other; (ii) switching means (10) for switching the developing rollers (23) between the contact state and the spacing state when the cartridges (9) are set in the mounting portions; (iii) a feeding belt (11) for feeding the recording material along all of the drums (1) of the cartridges (9) set in the mounting portion; (iv) control means (31) for switching, in accordance with a kind of the recording material in a monochromatic mode operation, between a first mode in which the feeding belt (11) is placed at a first position for contacting to all of the drums (1) of the cartridges (9) and a second mode in which the feeding belt (11) is placed at a second position wherein the feeding belt (11) contacts only the drum (1K) of the cartridge which develops the latent image for image formation, wherein in the monochromatic mode, the image is formed on the recording material through development of only one of the cartridges (9), and wherein in a cartridge (9) in which no development is performed in the monochromatic mode, the switching means (10) is in the spaced state. <IMAGE> |
