A method and an apparatus for displaying a text message and a mobile terminal having the same are provided to protect privacy and personal information of a user by allowing the user to check a message without being interfered. Pixel data for a background screen image and character information to be displayed are received(S510). A region to be taken by the characters to be displayed in the background screen image is extracted(S520). A pixel value of the background screen image with respect to the extracted region is extracted(S530). The pixel value is changed by adding/subtracting an offset to the extracted pixel value, or changed by a table previously set according to characteristics of an LCD(S540). The changed pixel data is outputted together with a background screen image so as to be displayed(S550).
