A display apparatus and a method of controlling the display apparatus are provided to vary the position of a highlighted control item of a user-controlled menu according to various video input sources to allow a user to easily find a desired control item. A method of controlling a display apparatus having a user input unit includes steps of selecting a menu display function by operating the user input unit(S31), confirming the current video input source(S32), and displaying a user-controlled menu including at least one control item(S33). A control item corresponding to the confirmed video input source is highlighted in the user-controlled menu.
