An eddy current propulsion system comprises a means for moving a magnetic field relative to a spaced guide member across a gap, to induce eddy currents in the conductive member and create a traction force. An elevator carriage 13 may be propelled by the system. Cylindrical rotors 22 carrying permanent magnets are rotated relative to conductors 14. Alternatively permanent magnets may be on rotating discs or endless belts or fixed electromagnets may be selectively excited to generate the moving field. The conductor 14 may be on the movable carriage and the magnetic field produced on the stationary structure. The arrangement allows the carriage 13 to be moved laterally between lift shafts. The system may also be used to propel and levitate a rail carriage. |
