FIELD: electrical engineering. ^ SUBSTANCE: proposed surge arrester has discharge current path with at least one varistor unit. In order to prevent cracking of varistor units in case of internal damage and associated electric arc provision is made for coating at least one varistor unit in vicinity of side surface with definite material that initiates electric breakdown when varistor unit temperature exceeds critical value. ^ EFFECT: enhanced reliability of power network protection against voltage surges. ^ 9 cl, 3 dwg
