A DMB(Digital Multimedia Broadcasting) system having a download service function using index information and a method of operating the DMB system are provided to selectively download learning contents by inputting only index information while a user is studying. A DMB system includes a DMB terminal(100) and a study information providing server(200). The DMB terminal provides a study service item by which a user downloads only desired learning contents using index information. When the user selects the study service item and inputs index information, the DMB terminal requests the study information providing server so as to transmit study information corresponding to the inputted index information, downloads the study information and displays the study information on a screen. The study information providing server receives the index information from the DMB terminal, reads study information corresponding to the index information from a study information database, and transmits the study information to the DMB terminal through a DMB data communication network(300) and a DMB broadcasting system(400).
