A moving robot with an obstacle avoidance function and a method thereof are provided to achieve improved effectiveness of avoidance by applying different avoidance algorithms in accordance with the combination of signals output from an infrared sensor and an ultrasonic sensor. A moving robot comprises a plurality of sensor units(160) constituted by a pair of an infrared sensor(161) and an ultrasonic sensor(162) having different sensing regions; a micro processor(150) for outputting a control signal for avoiding obstacles in accordance with the avoidance command corresponding to the combination of signals output from the infrared sensor and the ultrasonic sensor; a driving unit(130) including a left wheel motor(131) and a right wheel motor(132) for traveling the moving robot; and a memory(180) for storing moving robot operating programs and avoidance commands. The micro processor includes a travel control section(151) for controlling operation of the driving unit in accordance with the control signal; and an obstacle avoidance processing section(152) for outputting a control signal to the travel control section in such a manner that the moving robot travels in accordance with the avoidance command accessed by the memory.
